Coming to a campus near you

On Thursday, October 19, I will be giving a talk on the topic of scientism at UC Berkeley, sponsored by the Thomistic Institute.  Details available at the Institute’s website and at Facebook.

On Saturday, November 4, I will be giving a talk on the topic of conscience, at a conference devoted to that theme at Holy Rosary Parish in Portland, Oregon.  Conference details here.

On Saturday, November 11, Joe Bessette and I will participate in a panel discussion of our book By Man Shall His Blood Be Shed at the annual Fall Conference put on by the Center for Ethics and Culture at Notre Dame.

On Friday, December 1, I will be giving a talk on the subject of scientism at Cal Tech in Pasadena, sponsored by Science and Faith Examined.  More details to come.

Further talks around the country are scheduled for next year and will be announced before long.  Stay tuned.

    1. Why? It would take 2 hours just to get them up to speed with Ed's worldview.

You can say that about any worldview.

    3. I think the gap between Ed and Rubin or even Peterson would be greater than usual. Nothing less than a series of chats - and not a short series - would do.

Better would be Scruton. (Or is there one I've missed?)

    4. If people who are serious are watching, then it's worthwhile. The biggest problem with modern society isn't that nobody knows any philosophy (though that is a problem); it's that nobody even knows that anyone else knows any philosophy. Most people know little to no science, but they all know how great science is. When even actual Christians think that belief in God is a blind leap of faith, you know your culture is in trouble. People who are interested in learning about it can read Ed's books, but first folks need to know that there are such books, that Western Civilisation was built on a serious and powerful philosophical tradition that is no less important today than it ever was.
(When can we get Prof. Feser started on an international "Better than Science" Tour?)

  5. When can we expect your follow up to the AMA over at Strange Notions?

    1. Is Strange Notions a good website for people who are still somewhat novice in philosophy?

    2. I'm still looking forward to this too!

  6. Have you ever done an AMA on Reddit, Ed? I imagine the Catholic sub would appreciate it. Or the Philosophy sub perhaps.

    1. How is the Philosophy sub? New Atheist type?

    2. No there seems to be a pretty good mix of people over there.

    3. @ Anon

The philosophy sub is decent but not all that great. Askphilosophy is better, given that it has actual grad students and PhDs answering questions.

    4. Personally, I'd avoid reddit. The community can be pretty awful at times.

  7. Progressive Evangelical Shane Claiborne has a recent book out on the death penalty. Perhaps you should do a debate or discussion with him sometime and post a recording online:
